Different bearing and axle thickness

Hi, my daughter had a pair of quad roller skates which we bought some light-up LED wheels for, which she was really happy with.

She outgrew the boots, so we just bough a larger size pair secondhand. I've removed the wheels on both pairs to swap them so she can still have light-up wheels, and we've discovered they don't fit on the new boots. It seems it's a combination of the axles being slightly shorter by a few mm, and the bearings in the light-up wheels are slightly thicker. Once they're on the axles, there's not enough thread projecting to get the nuts on.

What are my options? It doesn't look like the axles are designed to be removed / replaced. Could I replace the bearings in the wheels? Or are they likely to be thicker because of something to do with the LED mechanics?

  • Low cost skates like you bought are not made to have replaceable components. That is their planned obsolescence or limited life. In skates that have replaceable components the axles are either 7mm or 8mm.
