Let's Talk About Skating Trails

What paved trails have you skated on,?

  • Where was the trail located? (country and nearest city)
  • How long was the trail?
  • Was it a loop trail or a point-point trail?
  • What was the surface like?
  • What was the scenery like?
  • What was the general experience like?
  • Are there any Web sites, social media sites, blogs, or articles on the Internet with information about the trail?

Are there any skating trails - anywhere in the world - you would love to try?

  • The trail next to my home is the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. It's 90 miles north of New York City. The trail itself is about 20 miles (32 kilometers). The best part of the trail is the Walkway Over the Hudson, it's a converted train bridge, 212feet (64meters) over the Hudson river and the bridge is a mile long. It is concrete and has expansion joints (so an inline skate is ideal for that part of the trail). There is an elevator that goes down to a park with a skate park. From end to end the trail is about 20 miles (32 kilometers). It's all paved and perfect for skating.

Bert Cooper Trail (Lake Hefner Trail)

    • Location: Oklahoma City, OK
    • Length: 9.6 mile (15.5 km) loop around Lake Hefner
    • Surface: Predominantly asphalt (resurfaced in 2019).
    • Scenery: Residential, lake views, freeway, golf course, Oklahoma scrub.
    • General experience: Generally wide, flat trail with a smooth surface. Strong Oklahoma winds for half the skate (15-20 mph in the spring). Hot, 95° temperatures for 3-4 months. No tree cover to protect against the elements. Trail allows motorists on limited-access portion around the dam. Few trail crossings, so a consistent workout is possible. A major destination for area cyclists. Lots of trail traffic; most users practice good trail etiquette.

Discovered the Hank Aaron State Trail in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin

two years ago. The final pavement from 94th Place in West Allis to the

Waukesha/Milwaukee County line was finished in December of 2018 so

that's the smoothest of asphalt right now. That portion was swept clear of

gravel rocks by me just over a week ago. Those don't usually matter to a

bicyclist but can turn deadly to the unwary skater! More info at:

  • I'll add to this

Brisbane, Australia has pretty good and extensive bike path network that can be readily skated upon. From short distances of a couple of kilometers to 40km plus (with some careful on-road) and probably near 60km one way!!

Surfaces vary from nice smooth concrete, pebble sections, bitumen/asphalt, brick and some wooden bridges with a few curbs to contend with.

Terrain is generally pretty flat with a few small ups and downs). Scenery is creeks and parks, motorways and wetlands, beachs and oceans depending on where you do.
