Help with plate sizing for dance skates

Hey Doc and other skate building pros!

I'm doing my first plate upgrade and need some help with sizing. I'm looking at Pilot Falcon Plates (not sure if toe stop or NTS yet) and think I'd like to try a little bit of a shorter mount. How short I should/could go? Is there a max size down you'd go? For example, Cherri here says she always goes down two plate sizes (https://youtu.be/SxiF-00ynE8).

Some background:

- I mainly do dance skate and shuffle around with friends at the local rink.

- I wear a size 8 women's in street shoes and fit size 7 in Riedell 135s, Boardwalks, and Moonlight Rollers.

- My Riedell 135s have a Reactor Fuse plate with wheelbase of 164mm, my Boardwalks have a Rock Plate with a wheelbase of 147mm, and my Moonlight Rollers have a wheelbase of 150mm. With these in mind, I'm considering the 5.25 (133mm), 5.5 (140mm), and 5.75 (146mm) plates, but am open to feedback and suggestions!

- I currently skate on some Moonlight Rollers and think my pivot point is a little forward of the ball of my foot. My Boardwalks feel great to skate on.

Thank you for your help!

  • 1) One of the things to be wary of on boots with heels is short mounts can put the rear mount holes ahead of the heel. Can't mount them that way without a lot of screwing about. So make sure you will have enough room to do what you want.

    2) Two sizes down?? I typically go 3 (assuming 1/4 size interval There are 1/2" interval plates that would be an inch and a half @ 3sizes. Sooo Ignore the whole size mishmash) on a speed style boot, but that's me. YMMV. That said I would think a 140mm or 146 would be fine.

    3) just make sure the plates are properly aligned. Good luck!!
